Interview with Javier, winner of UniFormation Spring Print Challenge

Q: What made you want to create this Avatar project?
Javier Otero
A: What made me want to create this project was the emotional connection I have with the movie. The aesthetics of Pandora, its nature, and that feeling of total immersion completely captivated me. I wanted to recreate a small piece of that world, as if you could actually touch Pandora.
UniFormation
Q: Which part of the build was the biggest challenge?
Javier Otero
A: The biggest challenge was definitely painting the skin. Recreating all the subtle lines, patterns, and textures that make the Na’vi look alive required a lot of patience and attention to detail. It wasn’t about applying a simple base color; it was about building layers and textures that would give the skin a natural and believable appearance. Getting that balance right took the most time and effort throughout the project.
UniFormation
Q: During this project, was there ever a moment where you almost wanted to restart or give up on a section? What happened?
Javier Otero
A: Yes, there were a few moments where I felt frustrated, especially with the skin patterns and textures. Avatar characters have very distinctive markings, and I spent quite a bit of time searching for the right approach and settings to reproduce them accurately. Another major challenge was the bowstring. Instead of using a simple solution, I decided to create it by hand, braided strand by strand, thread by thread. It was a slow and demanding process, and there were moments when I questioned whether it was worth the effort. In the end, persistence paid off, and I was able to achieve exactly the look I had imagined. Looking back, those challenges became some of the most rewarding parts of the project.
UniFormation
Q: Was there a moment during the process where you thought “okay… this is going to look amazing”? 😄
Javier Otero
A: There was a key moment when I started painting the bioluminescent details of the vegetation. Seeing those effects come to life under the light made me realize how spectacular the final piece was going to be. That was the moment when the vision I had from the beginning finally became real.
UniFormation
Q: Which detail or section are you personally the most proud of?
Javier Otero
A: I’m most proud of two elements: the skin texture and the bioluminescent flora. The skin was probably the most demanding part because of all the fine details and markings, while the glowing vegetation is what gives the piece its magical Pandora atmosphere. Together, those two elements are what bring the statue to life and make it feel like a scene taken directly from the movie.

Q: When you finally finished the Avatar piece, what was the very first thing you felt?
Javier Otero
A: Relief, followed immediately by pride. Relief because I was working against the clock. I had recently moved into a new studio, and I found myself in that stressful period where I still had to print, paint, and fully complete the piece before the deadline. Fortunately, the remaining parts were completed quickly thanks to the GK3 Ultra’s large build capacity and reliability, which made the final stage much easier and faster. In the end, I finished the project with four days to spare, giving me enough time for final adjustments and touch-ups. 🤗🤗 After that feeling of relief came pride. Seeing all the individual pieces come together into the vision I had imagined from the beginning was incredibly rewarding. It’s one of those moments that reminds you why you love creating.

Q: Your process videos really caught people’s attention. How important is it for you to share the journey behind a project instead of only the final result?
Javier Otero
A: For me, sharing the process is essential. I believe that showing the experiments, mistakes, and lessons learned creates a much stronger connection with the community. In the end, the final result is the product of a journey, and sharing that journey can inspire others.
UniFormation
Q: How did the GK3 Ultra help during this project, especially with a piece at this scale?
Javier Otero
A: The GK3 Ultra played a key role in this project, especially thanks to its precision and large build volume. Its stability when printing large-scale parts made a huge difference because I didn’t have to split the model into as many sections.
UniFormation
Q: How did the GK3 Ultra help during this project, especially with a piece at this scale? In a project that takes weeks to complete, what makes you truly start trusting a printer like the GK3 Ultra?
Javier Otero
A: For me, trust comes from consistency. A printer earns my confidence when it can produce large and complex parts over and over again without surprises. With the GK3 Ultra, I started trusting it after several successful prints where the details were sharp, the dimensions were accurate, and the machine remained reliable throughout long printing sessions. Another important factor is the screen quality. The 16K resolution delivers the level of detail I am always looking for in my pieces. When you’re creating display-quality collectibles, every texture and surface detail matters, and the GK3 Ultra consistently reproduces those fine details beautifully. When you invest weeks into a project, reliability and print quality become equally important.
UniFormation
Q: After spending so much time with the GK3 Ultra, what has your overall experience with the machine been like?
Javier Otero
A: After many hours of use, I can honestly say that my experience with the GK3 Ultra has been very positive. It is reliable and has delivered a level of consistency that is essential when working on large and complex projects.

Q: What does your workspace usually look like while working on a massive project like this? If possible, we’d also love to see a few photos of your workspace/setup.
Javier Otero
A: My workspace usually becomes a mix of organization and controlled chaos. During a large project, there are printed parts waiting for assembly, reference images on screens, paints, tools, and notes spread throughout the studio. I try to keep everything organized enough to work efficiently, but as the project grows, the workspace naturally evolves alongside it. It becomes part workshop, part creative laboratory. Looking at my current setup always reminds me of where I started. My first workshop was a very small attic space. It was so small that there was only enough room for a printer and a painting desk. On rainy days, water would sometimes find its way inside, and during the summer the temperatures could become extremely high. It wasn’t the ideal environment, but it was where I learned, experimented, and built many of my first projects. Today, having a dedicated studio feels like a dream compared to those early days. I now have a dedicated workspace, my GK3 Ultra, a painting area, specialized tools, and everything I need to tackle much more ambitious projects. Every completed project reminds me of that journey and how far I’ve come. When someone visits my studio for the first time, they don’t just see the finished figures. They also see the entire process behind them, from printing and assembly to painting and final presentation. I think that helps people understand the amount of work, dedication, and passion behind each piece. I would be happy to share a few photos of my workspace and setup so you can see where these projects come to life.
UniFormation
Q: If someone walked into your workshop for the first time, what would you hope they feel when looking at your creations?
Javier Otero
A: I would hope they feel inspired and immersed. Whenever visitors come into my studio, I love hearing them talk about the scenes or moments from the movie that the piece reminds them of. Seeing a figure bring back those memories and emotions is incredibly rewarding. I also enjoy when people look at a piece and say, “I wish I could do that too.” In fact, some friends who visit my workshop end up asking me about 3D printing because they would love to have a printer like this and create their own projects. For me, that kind of reaction is special because it means the piece is not only being admired, but it is also inspiring creativity in others. If someone leaves my studio feeling motivated to create something of their own, then I know I have achieved something meaningful.
UniFormation
Q: Is there anything you’d like to say to other 3D printing creators or people thinking about starting projects like this?
Javier Otero
A: I would tell other creators not to be afraid of taking on ambitious projects. The key is patience, being willing to learn from mistakes, and enjoying the journey rather than focusing only on the final result.
UniFormation
Q: Do you already have another crazy project planned next? 👀
Javier Otero
A: Yes! My next project will be a Superman statue inspired by Jim Lee’s iconic style, featuring that classic DC Comics aesthetic. As soon as I can, I’ll share an image as a teaser. It’s going to be a true classic.
